Community Weaver uses a captcha to reduce the likelihood that robots or spammers can automatically create new accounts or use the contact form. Unfortunately, individuals can still create bogus accounts and can submit spam-like content in the contact form.

Community Weaver allows ANYONE to use the contact form to send a message to your coordinators, and also allows ANYONE to create a new applying member account. As a result, individual scammers might send a message via the contact form or create a bogus account. To eliminate these possibilities we would need to

  • prevent anyone from sending contact form messages, which would prevent the public from being able to reach you easily
  • prevent anyone from using the join feature in CW.

What to do? Do not be startled by people who misuse the contact form for attempted spam or phishing messages. In such cases, just delete the bogus message or bogus account. This is the annoyance that we have to tolerate in order to allow new people to join CW and to write to coordinators.

Community Weaver does allow you to switch off the join feature. In that case a coordinator would need to manually add each new applying member, since they could no longer do it themselves. This will prevent bogus applying member accounts, but will increase the coordinator's work load.
