Community Weaver does allow you to switch off the join feature. In that case a coordinator would need to manually add each new applying member, since they could no longer do it themselves. This will prevent bogus applying member accounts, but will increase the coordinator's work load.

Community Weaver uses a captcha to reduce the likelihood that robots or spammers can automatically create bogus applying member accounts. Unfortunately, individuals can still use the join function to create bogus applying member accounts.

Community Weaver allows ANYONE to create a new applying member account. As a result, individual scammers might create a bogus account. To eliminate this possibility we would need to prevent anyone from using the join feature in CW.

What to do? Do not be startled by people who misuse the contact form for attempted spam or phishing messages. In such cases, just delete the bogus message or bogus account. This is the annoyance that we have to tolerate in order to allow new people to join CW and to write to coordinators.

Community Weaver does allow you to switch off the join feature. In that case a coordinator would need to manually add each new applying member, since they could no longer do it themselves. This will prevent bogus applying member accounts, but will increase the coordinator's work load.
